Should I change my major?

Your years in college are supposed to be a time when you can figure out what you enjoy and what you want to do in life. However, many students today feel pressured to choose a major of study their first year of college, and even if they find that they do not enjoy the subject or prospective career paths, they feel as though it is too late to change majors.

If you are struggling with a situation like this, it is important to know that it is probably not too late to change majors, and it is best to graduate from college with a degree and career in mind that you love, rather than settle for one you blindly picked or someone picked for you.

Parents can be extremely influential when it comes to deciding on an undergraduate major and degree, and this is sometimes not a good thing. For instances, some parents want their children to study something they deem as prestigious or will likely make them a good salary, such as a medicine or law.

But if you do not like medicine or law, and you prefer art history or public relations, consider what your parents have suggested, but ultimately make your own decision. Do what makes you happy and what will give you the most satisfaction.

You may worry that it is too late to change your major if you are a junior or a senior in college, especially if you are under pressure to graduate on time due to costly tuition bills. You may benefit from talking to an academic advisor in the department you are interested in. It is likely that because you are an upperclassman, you have already fulfilled many general requirements and you need less core courses than you think.
