Foods that naturally boost your energy

Maintaining energy throughout the day can be difficult. The things we turn to for a boost often end up dragging us down in the long run because they are loaded with refined sugar, caffeine or some other stimulant that can actually sap our strength over time. There are some foods to turn to, however, that provide some zip without the negative side effects.

Fresh fruits
With fiber that helps your body absorb carbohydrates and natural sugars that can give you a surge, fruit is a great way to get a kick. Having fruit nearby and ready to go can help make it an appealing choice instead of reaching for that third cup of coffee. Berries are an especially energy-dense food.

Spicy peppers and herbs
There's a reason spicy foods often feel like they're giving you a jolt. Aiding in respiration and circulation, spicy foods - especially cayenne pepper - can add some pep to your step. Also, because they pack a potent flavor punch without much added fats or sugars, they are less likely to promote sluggishness.

Nuts and seeds
Full of nutrients, healthy fats, protein and fiber, seeds - such as pumpkin and sunflower - and nuts - such as almonds and pistachios - are a satisfying way to boost your energy. For variety, combining many types with some dried fruit can give you a steady snack source throughout the day. Stay away from packaged trail mixes though, which can be larded with extra salts and sugars.

Water
So simple, yet so often overlooked, water is an easy way to feel invigorated. Even mild dehydration can leave you feeling fatigued and keep your body from functioning well. Having water close at hand can help you nip exhaustion in the bud.

Planning ahead by packing some of these natural energy sources will help keep you from buying that extra cup of coffee or heading to the vending machine when weariness sets in.
