Four ways to soothe an upset stomach

Everyone has an upset stomach from time to time. Nausea and vomiting can be caused by a variety of things from a viral infection to motion sickness. Unfortunately, most people feel as though there are very few ways to remedy nausea since there is no antibiotic or similar treatment. However, there are a variety of things you can do that are all-natural and can help you to feel better quickly.

1. Suck on ginger - Ginger is not only good on sushi, it is also good for your stomach. Everyday Health explains that ginger has been used for thousands of years to alleviate symptoms of upset stomach. You can blend it into a healthy shake, use it to flavor tea or simply let it dissolve on your tongue.

2. Flavor with peppermint - Do you have any candy canes left over from Christmas? Peppermint has been shown to help vomiting, morning sickness, gastrointestinal cramps, gas and diarrhea, according to the US National Library of Medicine. Many health stores offer potent peppermint oil that is great in food and drinks.

3. Eat something bland - Although you often don't feel like eating when you have an upset stomach, it might be a good idea to try something bland. The Cleveland Clinic suggest small, frequent meals that are not sweet or greasy. TLC Family offers an old remedy that includes crumbling a piece of toast into hot milk that it says is easy on the stomach.

4. Drink fluids - WebMD explains it is important to drink water if you are nauseous because you might be dehydrated. You should also consume a lot of fluids if you are vomiting in order to replace what is being lost. If you can't stomach drinking, consider simply sucking on ice chips.
