Yet another reason to stop smoking: your hair might fall out

If you're smoking and those around you are trying to tell you to quit, they probably cite a number of health dangers to sway you to their way of thinking. Lung cancer, emphysema, throat and mouth cancer and heart disease are just a few of the very real potential health problems that they might mention.

One that they might not know about is hair loss. While this is of course not nearly as harmful as any of the concerns mentioned above, it's still something that you are likely hoping to avoid happening to you in the future.

The potential loss of hair folicles is a concern that both male and female smokers should keep in their minds the next time they decide to light up. Excessive drinking is another unhealthy vice that can adversely affect hair retention in men as well as women, along with the various other issues that can come up from consuming too much alcohol on a regular basis.

Although hair loss may be a natural part of aging, it's not something many people want. It can be embarrassing and detrimental to self-esteem. Even though a reduction in self-esteem isn't exactly as harmful in the long run as cancerous growths in the lungs - or anywhere else, for that matter - its still something worth avoiding if it's at all possible to do so.

If you want to help minimize the possibility of hair loss, get started now on eliminating cigarettes and any other tobacco products from your life. You can also avoid other risk factors. In men, excessive sun exposure and a lack of regular exercise can be detrimental in this matter, while intense mental stress and a history of skin conditions can promote hair loss in women.
