Tips for a healthy long-distance relationship

It is an unfortunate side effect of our increasingly mobile world that many of us are at one point or another involved in a long-distance relationship. In times past, this setup was extremely rare. Most often, you met your future mate through mutual friends and never spent a large stretch of your life too far apart.

However, with frequent career changes and school often taking us far from home, the reality is that many of us must adapt to this new form of relationship. It can easily fill us with anxiety or make us consider ending it prematurely, but it doesn't have to. With a few simple practices, a long-distance relationship can be happy, healthy and fulfilling.

Honest communication
This isn't much different from a traditional arrangement - regular and open dialogue is crucial across the board. However, this is amplified when thousands of miles separate the two of you. Making a point of discussing problems and pitfalls before they blossom is a good way to keep them from getting out of hand.

It is common for two people to have different approaches to communication. Because of this, it is best to be as explicit as possible about what you expect. This way you can find a system that works for both of you - instead of one that leaves one of you feeling powerless.

Visit often
Depending on how far apart you are, this can be difficult. However, the time you share face-to-face should be the foundation of your relationship. Therefore, try to prevent long stretches of going without it. It is easy to get a skewed sense of your situation when there are months between real, physical encounters.

Build an independent life
Although a big component of most relationships is the sharing of activities and passions, this is not always possible in a situation like this. Building a life filled with hobbies that you can explore independently - and then discuss later - is a good way to feel like you depend less on the distant party for happiness.
