Tips for going green this summer

Summer is perhaps the time we appreciate the natural environment the most. Visiting the beach, exploring national parks and spending long evenings on the porch are all common summer activities. On the other hand - with lots of driving and air conditioning - it can also be a season where it's tough to be environmentally friendly.

That doesn't have to be the case, though. With a few tips, it's easy to stay green during the greenest time of the year.

Home improvement
In addition to relaxing vacations, summer is often a time for completing those long overdue home projects. Landscaping, car maintenance and thorough cleaning are all things that people catch up on in the summer. With that said, it's important to make sure you are doing so in the greenest way possible.

Over-watering your lawn or garden can waste water at a time when it is particularly valuable. Implementing a timer or a more efficient sprinkler system can help you limit water use.

Likewise, making sure to properly dispose motor oil and harsh cleaning solutions is a great way to help the environment. Researching ways to properly dispose whatever you're using can help you keep people, animals and the environment safe.

Efficient A.C.
We all know it can get pretty hot in the summer, and there's often nothing more refreshing than cranking the air conditioning to full blast. These machines, however, are notorious for hogging energy so it's important to ensure that you are using them as efficiently as possible. Make sure windows are closed and the unit is properly installed before firing it up. Also, try it at a lower speed than you normally do, and see if it keeps you cool.

Summer is a great time for trips, but it doesn't need to be a vacation from your green responsibilities.
