Tips on getting the best flight deals

Everyone loves a good vacation, but no one enjoys the expensive airfare that is required to make the trip. Sometimes it can seem like you are paying just as much for the family's airline tickets as you are for the hotel or the resort. However, you do not have to pay an arm and a leg for flights. There are a variety of tips and tricks that seasoned fliers use for every trip. Try one of these simple suggestions and stop overpaying for plane tickets.

1. Buy at the right time - The trick to getting airfare at a good rate is knowing when to buy. If you can, book travel well in advance, as this can save you a lot of money. However, so can buying tickets at the last minute. Independent Traveler explains that ticket prices usually increase 21, 14, 7 and 3 days before a flight. If you buy in between one of these price peaks you have a great chance of saving money.

2. Remain flexible - If you can travel anytime, compare the price of tickets for different weeks as some days and weeks will be cheaper than others. Some websites will even let you view a month of prices at once so you can plan your vacation around the cheapest flying time. You may also want to be flexible in your airports if possible. If you can get to a major airport with an hour or so drive it may be well worth the savings compared to a closer, but smaller airport.

3. Sign up for airline e-mail lists - Most airlines send a daily or weekly e-mail that lists airline deals. This is a great way to snag a deal on tickets, especially if you are a flexible flier. Consider also subscribing to frequent flier clubs as they are free and the points may add up faster than you think.
