Traveling Will Broaden College Students' Horizons
College is a time of incredible growth and transition for students enrolled in educational institutions all over the world. It has the potential to be an incredibly exciting period in your life, when you learn, laugh, love and live in ways you'd never been able to when you were younger.
One of the best ways to do this is to take part in a study abroad program - a semester, or in some cases a year, spent in an exotic foreign locale. The majority of colleges and universities in the U.S. and elsewhere offer such programs. They are a great opportunity to observe different cultures and broaden your perspective on the world, while advancing your educational goals.
The occasionally high costs of these educational opportunities may be an issue for you, as they are for more than a few college students in today's world.
If this is the case, you can see if your school has a study-abroad program that isn't quite as long - maybe a few months, a month or even just a few weeks, instead of a semester or more. Taking part in a shorter program might be beneficial in other ways besides lower costs. Since you have less time, you have to do more within that time to get the full worth of the experience, not to mention your money, and that will hopefully make your studying and social experience that much more interesting.
Another tip to think about if participating in a study abroad program is how "foreign" you want your experience to be. It might be best to avoid the areas in your program's location that mostly cater to tourists like yourself and to try for a more authentic experience. Conducting adequate research beforehand regarding the language and social customs will be necessary, but should be worth it in the long run.
