Four ways to boost your car's resale value

You have a lot of fun memories involving your car, but the time has come to part ways in order to put some money in your pocket or make room for another vehicle. No matter how old your car, there are some simple things you can do to increase its resale value before listing it in the classifieds.

1. Clean, clean, clean - Cleaning the interior and exterior of your car is going to make a huge difference to the buyer. No one wants to spend thousands of dollars on a car that as gum residue in the cup hold or tire rims caked with grease. It may even be worth it to spring for a professional detailing before showing your car to prospective buyers.

2. Fix dents and dings - Even if the car's record is clean, a smart shopper will be weary of any dents and dings, no matter how small. A used car in bound to have some wear and tear but it is important that you take care of these dents if you want top dollar for the car. Call around and get estimates on how much the work cost, it is probably more cost effective than you think and the payoff could be huge.

3. Don't update the speakers - Experts say that it is not a good idea to update the sound system in the car. Not only will you likely not get a return on your investment, but some buyers may not like how a flashy stereo looks in the car.

4. Advertise - Place more than one advertisement about your car when you are ready to sell. The more people that are interested in buying, the more likely you are to get your asking price - or even above asking price.
