Some essential practices for getting the best vehicle repairs

Every automobile, regardless of its make, model, features or age, needs repairs or at least maintenance at some point or another. Even though you probably understand this reality perfectly well, it doesn't make it any less frustrating when you don't have the time to let your car languish for days in the body shop.

As a result, you might just go with the first auto repair location you find that appears at least slightly reliable and is reasonably priced, just to get the process over with. You might get lucky, but more likely than not, it'll be better to take the extra time to do research and find a repair shop that's as suited to your car's well-being as it is to your wallet.

Finding a reputable and relatively affordable repair shop is an intricate, if not necessarily difficult process. Ask your friends and family members where they usually go for this purpose, and supplement this practice by doing research online - websites like Yelp.com are particularly useful for this purpose.

Once you've found a few different locations that look promising, compare and contrast their strengths and weaknesses. Check to see if any of them are certified with the Automotive Service Excellence seal. Also look if they specialize in your vehicle's make and model - although this latter factor might not specifically matter - and see if they take your warranty.

After picking the right shop and arriving at the location, ask for a written estimate that provides details of the problem that requires repairs, the necessary parts and an expectation of the final cost. Make sure that this copy is signed.

You'll also want to be sure you're at least somewhat familiar with your car's processes. It's not necessary to have the knowledge of a mechanic, but if you know nothing you could end up being overcharged for no reason.

Where do you usually go when your car is in need of repairs?
