Improve your health by owning a pet

Dogs and cats, birds or fish, rabbits and hamsters - pet options are endless, and so are the health benefits associated with them. According to sources such as the Centers for Disease Control and WebMD, you can improve your health tremendously by owning a pet, and in a variety of ways at that.

Reportedly, owning a pet may be a good idea for people having trouble maintaining healthy cholesterol levels as well as triglyceride levels. Pet owners also typically have lower blood pressures, according to the National Center for Infectious Diseases. WebMD says that doctors still recommend that patients who are trying to manage high cholesterol should get a pet. Experts are still a little unsure of whether lower cholesterol and blood pressure is a result of having the pet around or if it is because pet owners typically have more active lifestyles. Either way, why not try it out and get a pet if you are battling with some of these issues?

WebMD also explains that pets naturally enhance your mood. This is because playing with a cat or dog, or watching a fish swim, can reduce stress and anxiety. An animal's ability to naturally relieve stress has been clinically proven to reduce cortisol levels within only 15 to 30 minutes of interaction.

Furthermore, having pets in your home has been proven to build stronger immunities and help the body to experience fewer allergies. This helps people exposed to pets, especially infants and children, to be less at risk for illness and disease as they are exposed to more allergens and germs brought into the house by the pets.
