How can my small business go green?

Going green is not just trendy, it is also great for the environment and can even save your small business money. Small businesses especially want to do all they can to save a little, and practicing environmentally friendly behaviors are a good way of keeping some money in the bank.

For instance, did you know that by unplugging electronics that are not being used during off-hours can reduce your electric bill and save valuable energy. This is because when something is plugged in, even if it is off, it is using some energy. Therefore, unplug office laptops and coffee makers at the end of the day. Not only will this keep wastes out of landfills, but if you print your store name or logo on the cloth bags, this can encourage customer loyalty.

The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) also offers a variety of ways a small business and be environmentally friendly. One tip the NFIB says is it to buy hybrid company cars or trucks. If a pizza shop, for example, uses a hybrid car for deliveries, they can reduce wastes and may even qualify for a tax credit. Also, consider offering employees incentives for buying hybrid cars of their own or carpooling to work, suggests the NFIB.

Recycling in the office is another important importance aspect of keeping your small business green. Money CNN says a small business owner may want to look at the materials a company uses the most and find out how you can recycle those materials, whether it means have a bin inside the office for paper or taking used ink cartridges to a nearby recycling center.

Finally, consider switching your energy sources. Switch to solar powered energy and enjoy a long-term investment. At the very least, make sure your company is using Energy Star qualified appliances and light bulbs.
