How can I be sure I am getting quality self-help advice?

Self-help techniques work wonders for millions of people around the world. However, others may fall into the wrong hands when it comes to getting advice about self-help and find that they have only wasted money on books or programs from these unreliable sources.

John Norcross, the author of "Authoritative Guide to Self-Help Resources in Mental Health," explains to CNN that self-help is an unregulated industry in the United States that brings in billions of dollars every year. In fact, the New York Post estimates that the self-improvement industry makes $8.56 billion annually in the US. However, because it is unregulated, you get a lot quality books and programs that are based on research, but also find countless programs that are based on little supporting evidence could therefore even make matters worse.

"You can publish anything making the most outrageous claims as long as it's not libelous," explained Norcross.

So what can you do to ensure that you get quality advice when you need it the most? Norcross tells CNN that the you should look for authors with formal scientific training. On the other hand, be wary of authors who try to say that they have a big secret that no one else knows or only gives vague suggestions.

If you follow these simple guidelines when selecting a self-help book or program to follow, you should be able to find one that can benefit you and your life. Self-help is still a legitimate form of help in the eyes of many experts. The New York Post reports that around 85 percent of qualified psychotherapists recommend self-help techniques and programs to their clients.

Consider how a self-help program may help you to uncover happiness and success - just be sure to find the follow the correct advice.
