Affordable Family Vacations

Affordable family vacations

As summer begins in earnest, many people's minds turn to vacations. However, with gas prices on the rise and the economy still far from fully recovered, considering the expense of a summer holiday can induce stress - but it doesn't have to. With these ideas for original and budget-friendly getaways, you can have a fun experience while sticking to your budget.

State fair
Summer is the time for state fairs. With their abundance of exhibits, rides and restaurants, these fairs make a perfect day trip for families with kids of all ages - and they don't have to break the bank. Admission is typically cheap - and often reduced for kids - and it's easy to make a limit for rides and concessions. Give kids a reasonable amount of tickets and allow them to use them as they see fit.

Camping
Bring a tent, some sleeping bags and a few cans of foods and this can be a fun, thrifty way to spend a few days. Exposing your kids to the great outdoors helps show them that it can be fun to get off the couch and is a great way to spend some time as a family. Bringing nature guides and campfire stories to make this a trip they - and you - will never forget.

Historical landmarks
Wherever you are, there's likely an important and interesting location nearby. Battlefields, birthplaces and famous estates are dotted across the United States and are a great way to combine nice weather, fun facts and education into one fantastic family vacation.

Museums
Another way to add some educational value to your family getaway is by heading to a museum. Libraries often have reduced price or free tickets for children and they can keep you engaged for an entire day. Science museums in particular are likely to keep kids running to the next exhibit.
