Four things to keep in mind when traveling to another country

Going on vacation is very exciting and if your vacation is to an exotic location or different country, it is even more thrilling. However, it is important to not let the excitement cloud your judgement as to what you should consider when traveling to an unfamiliar area. Consider these five things before jet setting around the world.

1. Make copies of everything - Before you leave town, make copies of all of the important documents that you will be taking with you and leave them with someone at home you can trust. The U.S. Department of State suggests making a copy of your passport, license and visa.

2. Tell someone about your plans - Tell a friend or relative about your travel plans. Let them know who you will be staying with or visiting and leave a copy of your itinerary and contact information with them. This information could be vital in case of an emergency.

3. Research local laws and customs - Countries vary in their laws and regulations. Familiarize yourself with the laws and legal system in the country you are visiting so that you can be prepared for all situations. Furthermore, investigate customs such as how the locals dress. A dress that is modest in the U.S. might be considered obscene in another country, for instance.

4. Don't take a lot of cash - The U.S. Bureau of Consular Affairs explains that while traveling abroad, it is usually a good idea to leave the cash at home and take traveler's checks and major credit cards instead. If you want to take a small amount of cash in the local currency, that should be okay, but remember that you can always get more there if you need it.

In Brief

  • Going on vacation is very exciting and if your vacation is to an exotic location or different country, it is even more thrilling.
