Donate to a charitable cause this Christmas

According to the annual Gallup poll taken on expected holiday spending, Americans expect to spend $712 on Christmas gifts during the 2011 holiday season. Although the recession can be seen in this estimate, as the average spent in 2008 was $909 per a person.

While giving holiday gifts is great, what you give to loved ones can start to become a blur over the years. It may be difficult to remember what you gave your sister with last year. Rather than spending your money this year on traditional gifts, consider donating the money to a charitable cause.

There are several ways that you can donate your Christmas gift money. For example, have all of the people that you usually give gifts to choose a charity that means something special to them, then make a donation to that organization in the recipient's name. When it is time to pass around gifts on Christmas, give them each a card that lists the charity or cause and write the amount that was donated in their name. This gift will mean a great deal to the person and is something that they will remember for years to come.

You could also donate all of the money that you would spend on gifts and donate it all to one cause that has meant something to you and your family or friends. For example, if your grandmother has been battling breast cancer, consider donating all of the money towards breast cancer research.

If you usually give children gifts for Christmas, consider finding a way to explain to them where there usual gifts are. You could, for instance, put the money towards gifts for the annual Angel Tree charity, then print of pictures of the gifts you donated and give the children the pictures. This might help them to understand that they helped others who are less fortunate by sacrificing their own gifts.
